Our Story
The tale of how Andrew and Caitlin were united by love is not easily described in a few paragraphs.
The year was 2002 and Caitlin and Andrew attended their first day of second grade at Felix A. Williams Elementary School. Their initial encounter was unmemorable, either due to hazy childhood memories or the result of anxieties that often accompany one’s first day of school. Not only did Caitlin and Andrew’s relationship begin forming, but so too did their friendships with lifelong friends - Maggie, Katie, and Travis.
Fast forward a few years of sharing the same classroom, teachers, and friends, it wasn’t until fifth grade that Andrew made a bold decision that would change the course of his life forever. One evening after school, he called Caitlin’s home phone and asked Candace to speak with her daughter.
“Caitlin, there’s a boy on the phone for you!” When Caitlin answered, “Hello?” Andrew paused, not having planned this far, and blurted out, “I like you,” and hung up. For the next few days, the two avoided eye contact and conversation. Finally, Caitlin left a note in Andrew’s cubby, confessing, “I like you too.”
Queue the butterflies.
I wish I could tell you it was happily ever after from there, but life had many lessons to teach these children before their love evolved. Caitlin and Andrew spent hours chatting on the phone and on AOL instant messenger, and much less face-to-face at school. There was even a first date as their parents dropped them off at a Jensen Beach High School football game, where the two were too nervous to engage in much conversation. Eventually, the two became “just friends” as they transitioned to middle school, still continuing their now daily ritual of talking on the phone.
Through middle school and into high school, though the sparks faded, they never fully extinguished. Caitlin and Andrew shared many memories as close friends, running track and struggling through classes in high school during the weekdays and sharing weekends surfing or tubing on Andrew’s boat. These memories were all shared with their closest friends, Maddy, Thomas, Travis, Vicki, Maggie, and Brianne. One year for Halloween, Andrew and Caitlin decided to swap places and dress up as each other. However, the memories from this time weren’t all positive. High school marks another erratic decision made by Andrew when he tried to kiss Caitlin, unsuccessfully. Their friendship slowed down after that, at which point Andrew decided if he could not be Caitlin’s boyfriend, then it would be better to be friends, forever. Or so he thought.
Following graduation from high school, Caitlin and Andrew landed at the University of Florida. Their majors even aligned for a year under the college of Engineering. As freshmen in college, they shared more experiences together and were brought closer (platonically).
During Junior year of college, Andrew and Caitlin shared an apartment with their friend, Jo Ann. During this year, they continued to build memories together hosting friends, tailgates, movie, and game nights. College will always be a fond and shared memory between the two. After graduation, Caitlin went on to earn a graduate degree from Georgia Tech and move to Washington, D.C. to begin her career. Meanwhile, Andrew graduated and began his journey west to California.
Caitlin and Andrew spent these years on opposite sides of the country, building careers and forming new friendships. During this time, they remained in contact and reunited at least once a year during trips home to Florida for the holidays. The two had always shared a love for adventure and nature and found opportunities to visit each other for music festivals and backpacking trips, keeping their friendship going throughout the years.
It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment their friendship begin to evolve, but it was now Caitlin’s turn to make the first move. Throughout their friendship, Caitlin and Andrew had both been quizzed periodically by new friends, “What’s up with you two? Have you dated? Will you date? Why won’t you date?” The answer was always the same, “We’re best friends and that’s good enough for us.”
Things started to change after Andrew carried out his dream of buying and living in a camper van, using it to travel across the United States. Andrew enjoyed his first trip was to Zion National Park in 2023, where he was joined by friends - Yumi, Kansas, Lerna, and Caitlin. While living in the van, he saw parts of the country that were incredibly beautiful, but something was still missing.
The two continued on their separate trajectories, being brought together frequently by significant life events - weddings, a ten year high school reunion, birthdays, and holidays. It was during this time that something within Caitlin had changed…
In January on 2024, Caitlin and friends flew out to Beaver Creek for a trip while Andrew was snowboarding with his family there. They skied, explored, and enjoyed their time together in the mountains to the fullest, but
Shortly after that trip in Beaver Creek, Caitlin called Andrew on the phone to talk about her “thoughts and feelings”. While it took him off guard, Andrew picked up the phone
and listened to Caitlin tell him how she felt her feelings change towards him, much more
gracefully than “I like you”. While he was surprised and unsure of how to take the news,
it didn’t take very long for Andrew to fly out to D.C. to “figure things out”. On February
18 th 2024, Caitlin and Andrew became girlfriend and boyfriend, and started figuring out
how great being romantically in love with your best friend could be…
